What is Ark and what is it for?
Ark is a tool for Moss, the desktop app groups use to work together over Holochain, and it keeps a group's written record — minutes, decisions and reports — inside the group instead of in something one person administers. It files, amends and searches those documents, and every member holds a copy of the archive.
Ark is a tool for Moss, the peer-to-peer desktop app that groups use to work together over Holochain. It exists for the long written record a group builds up over years — minutes, decisions and reports — which usually ends up somewhere a single person administers: a website, a shared drive, or a wiki behind a password nobody can find. Ark keeps that record in the group instead, with each member holding it.
Group members file, amend and reorganise the archive themselves. Amending a document publishes a new version and keeps the old one, so the record shows what it says now and what it used to say. The folder tree is held apart from the documents, so reorganising never touches a document. Search runs in the browser across the whole archive, including the text of attachments alongside the documents themselves.
A group with an existing record can bring it in: Ark reads a folder of markdown files with YAML front matter, understands title, date, folder and attachments, and keeps every other key as it is, because what counts as metadata is the group's decision. Export writes the same layout back out as a zip. The repository README describes the setup and the commands for running it in Moss.
How to get it
In Moss
- Set up the Holochain development environment, then enter the nix shell in the repository root and install dependencies: nix develop, then npm install (run the remaining commands from inside that shell).
- Run it in Moss, which opens two agents in their own Moss windows sharing a group: npm run start:moss. Use npm run start:moss-1 for a single agent.
- Package a build with npm run package, which produces workdir/ark.webhapp.
Questions people ask
- What is Moss, and how does Ark relate to it?
- Moss is a peer-to-peer groupware desktop app for small teams, from Lightningrod Labs, in which a group assembles the tools it needs. Ark is one of those tools: a Moss tool for keeping the group's archive. source
- Can a document be changed after it is filed?
- Yes. Amending a document publishes a new version and keeps the previous one, so the archive shows both what it says now and what it used to say. source
- Can an existing archive be imported?
- Yes. Ark reads a directory of markdown files with YAML front matter — title, date, folder and attachments are understood, and other keys are carried through — and export writes the same format back out as a zip. source
