What is accountant-app and what is it for?

accountant-app is a Holochain DNA that a Holo host uses to keep a record of the service it provides on behalf of other people. Each record stores one request and its response, together with the resources that exchange consumed, so the work a host did can be seen and accounted for.

accountant-app is a small Holochain DNA: a package of Rust code that defines one kind of entry and the functions that write to it. It was written for Holo hosts — people who run applications on behalf of other people — as the part that records what a host served, so the work done for each user could be seen and totalled up.

Hosting someone else's application means doing work on their behalf: answering requests, sending back responses, spending processor time and bandwidth. accountant-app's idea is to write each of those exchanges into a record at the moment it happens, so the account of the work is kept by the party that did it. A log entry holds the key identifying the user served, a hash of the request and of the response, and the resources the exchange used.

The concrete mechanism is the zome's one public function, log_service: it takes an agent key, a request payload, a response payload and a set of metrics, hashes both payloads, and commits a single service-cycle entry. The validation logic also anticipates a later signing step, where a client signs a response hash so the host holds proof of receipt; the function that would attach that signature is left unimplemented. The repository at github.com/Holo-Host/accountant-app holds the entry definition and the function.

Questions people ask

What does one service log contain?
