What is Signatory and what is it for?

Signatory is a Holochain DNA whose purpose is to sign values, letting a key holder produce verifiable signatures over messages or other data. It is distributed as application code that someone runs themselves rather than as a hosted service, and its documented surface is deliberately small: sign a value with a key, or create a key from a seed.

Signatory is a signing application built as a Holochain DNA — a DNA being the unit of code that defines what a Holochain app does and which peers share its data. Its stated job is narrow and readable from its own title line: it exists to sign values, so that a key holder can attach a verifiable signature to a message or to other data inside that app.

The idea in human terms is a small, self-contained signing tool. A person supplies a key and a value; the app signs it. A second documented function runs the other direction: creating a key derived from a seed, which is useful when the key you sign with should be reproducible from something you can write down. The repository pairs the DNA with a simple interface built from HTML and JavaScript, so the two actions can be performed from a screen rather than only from code.

The concrete example is the one the maintainer documents: signing a message with a key. The repository's README walks through packaging the DNA, preparing an agent key file holding the seeds you will use, and pointing a Holochain conductor at the sample configuration included in the repository.
