What is hrl-gateway-node and what is it for?

hrl-gateway-node is a gateway: server software that answers ordinary web requests for data held in a hosted Holochain application's shared database. It exists so that a website, script or other program outside the network can read Holochain data through a normal HTTP request instead of running Holochain software of its own.

hrl-gateway-node is published in the Holo-Host organisation on GitHub as a Node.js program, and its repository describes it as "a gateway for agentless HTTP queries to hosted DHTs". In plain terms it is server-side software that stands between ordinary web clients and data an application hosts on Holochain, so that a request arrives over the web rather than from a Holochain agent.

Normally, reading an application's shared data means running Holochain software that takes part in the network. A gateway removes that step for the caller: the requesting client sends a web request and gets an answer, without installing a node, holding keys or joining the network. The word "agentless" in the project's own description points at exactly this — the querying side has no agent.

A concrete shape for that: a website or scheduled script that wants to show or check records from a hosted Holochain application can ask the gateway over HTTP rather than embedding Holochain software in its own stack. The code is small and sits under src in the repository; with no README and no release, the source is the documentation. The newest activity recorded for the repository is a push in October 2023, so current compatibility with newer Holochain releases is not something these sources establish.
