hREA

What is hREA and what is it for?

hREA is a framework of reusable building blocks that a Holochain app can use to record and coordinate economic activity: which resources moved or changed, in what event, and between which agents. It is built to implement ValueFlows, a shared vocabulary for describing those flows, so it serves as a backend that developers bring their own user interface to.

hREA is a suite of building blocks for supply chain systems, project management software, logistics management and enterprise resource planning, and for arrangements such as gift and contributory economies. Its name comes from Resource-Event-Agent accounting, and it is built to implement ValueFlows, a shared vocabulary for describing economic activity: the resources involved, the events in which they move or change, and the agents taking part. It uses Holochain for data storage, data integrity, networking and runtime, and the work was previously called Holo-REA or HoloREA.

hREA supplies backend building blocks rather than a packaged end-user application, so developers provide the user interface. It ships a pre-compiled Holochain DNA that a developer adds to their own app's configuration alongside their own DNAs, and a Javascript adapter library for GraphQL, which the project describes as the main way to interface with the suite. A team connects its own front end to the running DNA through that API.

The project's documentation works through one example in practice: recording a stock count adjustment. Someone observes how much of a resource is on hand and records the raised quantity, and hREA stores it as an economic event that names the action taken, who provided and who received, what the resource was, and when it happened.
