What is Flowsta Vault and what is it for?

Flowsta Vault is a desktop app that creates and keeps a person's online identity on their own computer rather than in a company's database. It uses that identity to sign the person in across websites and apps, sign their files, and hold encrypted backups of the apps they connect, with every approval made on the device.

Flowsta Vault is the desktop app where a Flowsta account begins. The project previously issued accounts through its website, and an account created there can be brought into the Vault during setup, with its username, data and earlier signatures along with it. From then on the account is held on the person's own computer rather than on a company's server.

An account is a set of cryptographic keys derived from a 24-word recovery phrase. The phrase is created on the device, and the same phrase rebuilds the same identity on any machine. Unlocking the Vault starts a local Holochain conductor that joins the Flowsta network and holds the keys for identity, signing and private data. Websites and apps reach the Vault through a connection on the machine, and each sign-in, identity link or signature is approved by the person in front of it.

One concrete use is Sign It: a file of up to 10 GB can be signed from the desktop's file menu, and a verifiable proof of authorship is published to a public signing network. The same identity signs a person in to sites that accept it and keeps encrypted backups of connected apps, which can be exported together with the keys needed to keep using them.
