What is file-storage-language and what is it for?

file-storage-language is an example AD4M language — a pluggable storage module for the AD4M framework — that provides file storage using Holochain. Written as an example, it shows how a language for AD4M is put together and how a host application loads and runs one.

file-storage-language is an example project from the coasys organisation that adds file storage to AD4M, the framework behind the Perspect3ve app. AD4M calls the pluggable pieces it runs "Languages", and this repository is one of them: its README describes it as an example AD4M Language project that implements file storage using Holochain. It is not an application you open, but a module that builds into a single JavaScript bundle for a host environment to load.

The idea is that an app should be able to save and find a file without caring which network holds it. A language takes a piece of data, stores it in some shared space, and hands back an address; later, given that address, it returns the same data. This project implements that pattern for files and includes a Holochain DNA, so the shared space it targets is a Holochain network; the AD4M documentation describes the same pattern with an IPFS language returning a content identifier and a Holochain language returning an entry hash.

In practice the language runs inside an AD4M host: the README says the resulting bundle is executed in Perspectivism, where the host calls its create() function with a context object carrying the agent and the available storage interfaces. No push has been recorded since March 2023, so read the build description as historical rather than as a current install guide.
