What is attestations and what is it for?

attestations is a Holochain app and developer tool for recording signed claims that one participant makes about another, so other people can verify who said what about whom. It was built as a small, deliberately minimal piece of infrastructure that other Holochain projects could reuse for things like joining controls, permissions, ratings and certificates.

attestations came out of Lightning Rod Labs, the organisation behind the repository, as a deliberately small piece of Holochain tooling. Its own design note describes it as 'a simple holochain app for recording claims about another agent', and the README points readers to a wiki and to a separate project, Elemental Chat, as an example rather than to a released product. When the Holochain project's developer blog introduced the project in March 2022, it described the library as 'pretty simple — basically just enough structure' for claims about people.

Attestations, in this sense, are personal statements rendered in a form software can check: one participant says something about a specific other participant, and the claim is stored together with the public key of the person it concerns. Because Holochain signs every entry, anyone holding that record can verify that the named participant really made the claim. Claims are linked from the person who made them, the person they are about, and an anchor derived from their content, so they can be found by any of those three routes.

The clearest documented example is joining a Holochain app. An app can require a membrane proof before a new participant is allowed in; an attestation from someone already taking part can serve as that proof, and the project's README cites Elemental Chat as an instance of this. The same shape of claim underlies ratings, badges, certificates and recorded permissions. The project's own documentation is its README and design note in the repository, and the recorded snapshot shows activity stalled since the 2022-era Holochain 0.0.x releases.
