What is Acorn hApp and what is it for?

Acorn hApp is the Holochain packaging repository behind Acorn, an open-source, peer-to-peer project management application for distributed software teams. It exists to define and release the app files that Acorn is assembled from — Profiles and Projects — while the application people actually use is built in a separate repository.

Acorn was envisioned and prototyped by the Holochain core development team in 2018 to organise their own planning, and Sprillow began building it on Holochain in 2019; Lightningrod Labs is the container for its development. The Acorn hApp repository is the Holochain-side code home for that work — hApp definitions, DNA definitions and zome code — and its README says it exists just to develop and release the two app files Acorn consists of: Profiles and Projects.

Acorn itself is an open-source project management application for distributed software teams, built as an alternative to scrum. Its documentation describes work as Intended Outcomes arranged in a dependency tree rather than a list of goals, and the application offers several ways to read that tree: a Map view for the whole picture, a Table view for individual tasks and a Priority view for ordering work. This repository is the packaging layer behind that interface, not the interface people use.

In practice, a distributed team reads its plan at more than one level — opening the Map view to see how outcomes depend on one another, then switching to the Table view to look at a single task. Anyone wanting the reasoning behind the methodology can start with the project's knowledge base. Latest publish activity on the repositories is from December 2024, and none of the sources read here show that the released builds still run against a current Holochain version, so this is best treated as a historical project.
